A polished display brimming with experience and class saw Northern Redbacks defeat a youthful Balcatta side 5-1 and claim the 2016 Bankwest Women’s State League Premier Division championship.

Report by Paul. J Laverty

This was their second consecutive title and secured them the double following their State Cup triumph over Melville City.

“The girls have worked hard,” said proud Redbacks coach, Tim Hodgson.

“We were fairly ordinary at the start of the season and had to change our system but it’s just reward now.”

The win was never in doubt as the impressive Demi Vance smacked the crossbar early on just before she laid a perfect low ball onto Renee Leota’s path who converted with ease on 14 minutes.

Vance was again the provider moments later when her driving run and cross from the right was slotted home this time by Nadene Caldwell.

Vance was denied from point-blank range with a fine reflex save from Gabby Dal Busco in the Balcatta goal but got her reward for her industrious performance latching onto a Nicola Williams through-ball on 37 minutes and placing the ball beyond the keeper’s grasp.

Hopes of a second-half comeback were thwarted early on when swift link-up play between Leota and Carla Bennet sent Vance through once again and she repeated her cool finish.

The home side didn’t give up with Melanie Doeglas rattling the woodwork from a tight angle before Madisyn Olguin scrambled the ball over the line to give Balcatta hope.

They laid siege to the Redbacks goal with Olguin again testing keeper Kathleen Waycott with a rasping drive before Caitlin Doeglas struck the rebound agonisingly over.

It was too-little too-late, though, as the away side sealed the points and the title when Caldwell pounced on a slack back-pass and subsequent sliced clearance by Dal Busco to put the icing on the cake with her second strike.

Balcatta coach Andrew Di Carlo was keen to use his side’s second-half display as something to build on for next season.

“We’ve got a great group of girls, great culture and a solid foundation, and hopefully we can move on to bigger and better things next year.”

But he was keen to pay tribute to their championship-winning opponents.

“They’re definitely the benchmark of the competition.”

CONGRATULATIONS NORTHERN REDBACKS FOR TAKING OUT THE WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE

September 15, 2016 By: Penny Category: Competitions

With one round left and a five point unreachable buffer, their last match against Melville City will be all about the battle for fourth place over NTC for Melville.

Redbacks are one of the most titled women’s teams in the history of women’s football in WA with the number of Night Series, Leagues and cups under their banner.

Let’s not forget their individual awards collecting this year with player of the State Cup (Vance) and top goal scorer for the league a tussle between Redback’s Leota and Beckenham’s Marianna Tabain.

How many titles is that Tim Hodgson?!

Redbacks see off Queens Park challenge

A clinical display by Northern Redbacks saw the title-holders take a significant step towards retaining their Bankwest Women’s State League Premier League crown with a 2-0 away win at Coker Park.

Report by Paul J. Laverty

An early goal in each half, the first a volley by Nadene Caldwell and the second a tidy finish by Renee Leota, brought title-challengers Queens Park back down-to-earth with a bump after their impressive victory at home to Beckenham Angels last week.

Redbacks coach Tim Hodgson was delighted with the victory.

“They’d beaten us twice already this year but we were more disciplined than in the past,” he said. “The focus was there for the whole 90 minutes.”

The top-of-the-table clash failed to spark into a pulsating encounter with the Redbacks coming out on top in almost every department.

The result could have been even more convincing had Lauren Riley not saw her first-half pile driver brilliantly tipped onto the bar by Danelle Cornish in the Queens Park goal.

For the home-side it was a day to forget with in-form forward Brooke Johnston failing to threaten the Redbacks’ rearguard. She was reduced to hopeful shots from outside the box which caused little trouble for shot-stopper Kathleen Waycott.

Falling four points adrift of top spot and seeing their league fate taken out of their own hands, Queens Park coach Ben Anderton was frustrated with his side’s display both with and without the ball.

“We showed them too much respect,” he said. “We let them play the ball too much and didn’t pressure.”

Hodgson’s Redbacks have another crunch game next week against Beckenham whose win against the National Training Centre side sees them leap above Queens Park into second place, just two points off Northern Redbacks.

“It’s certainly going to be very tough, we’ve been strong rivals for years” said Hodgson, ahead of his club’s clash with Beckenham.

“We need to put in a performance like we did today and maybe a little bit more.”
