A superb goalkeeping display from Balcatta’s Gabby Dal Busco was in vain, after Beckenham Angels ran out 2-1 winners in round 19 of the Bankwest Women’s Premier League, at a wet and windy Mills Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Perth Glory and young Matildas’ custodian produced a number of fine saves to keep the home side at bay, and it helped Balcatta to the lead at the break, with Caitlin Doeglas on target.

But a second half brace from Beckenham striker Katarina Jukic sealed the win and kept them in touch of leaders Northern Redbacks.

Jukic said they struggled on the day.

“We didn’t play our best today, but we did have many chances on goal to win it easily but didn’t convert them,” she said.

“Gabby was awesome for them today, she produced some great saves but they held the line high today and we were caught offside a number of times, but we managed to get the goals in the second half.

“They were scrappy goals but I’ll take them. We were well on top after the break and we had some great service from the midfield, so we’re just happy to take the points.”

Angels coach Jason Washington-King said Dal Busco was superb and they had to work hard to get the points.

“They (Balcatta) are a very good team and they drew with Queens Park last week, and we had to work hard to get the points today,” he said.

“We were a bit wasteful in front of goal today but Gabby was outstanding and I told her after the game. But if we had taken our chances we could have been out of sight.

“But we won the game and you never know in football the leaders might slip up, but we are looking to end the season well.”

Balcatta had the wind at their backs in the first half and Caitlin Doeglas tested stand-in keeper Rhian Mears early, before Madisyn Olguin shot straight at the Beckenham custodian moments later.

The visitors continued to take the game to their hosts and Ash Panaia fired wide on 10 minutes, before Olguin’s free kick flashed just wide of the target.

Balcatta’s early pressure was rewarded with the lead on 22 minutes, Caitlin Doeglas pouncing to fire low past Mears.

When the hosts did get in a scoring position they were thwarted by Dal Busco. Jukic’s curling shot on the half hour was well saved by the keeper, and moments later Marianna Tabain shot over the top.

But four minutes before the break, Beckenham should have levelled. Jukic’s shot was well saved by Dal Busco, but the ball fell kindly to Penelope Clayton who fired over the top.

The hosts opened brightly after the break. Shannon May’s shot was saved low by Dal Busco, before Kate Holtham was again denied by the Balcatta keeper.

Then from the resulting corner Dal Busco produced her best save of the day, reacting superbly to push Jukic’s effort around a post.

But just after the hour Dal Busco was beaten. May sent Holtham down the right and her cross picked out Jukic, who made no mistake at the back post.

It was one-way traffic now and Dal Busco stood tall to deny Eleanor Bates, before she saved low to thwart Jukic, as Beckenham pressed for the winner.

May did beat Dal Busco on 70 minutes but her shot crashed off the base of the post and Tabain’s follow up shot flashed wide.

But five minutes later Beckenham’s pressure told and they hit the front.  Jukic raced clear and held off her marker and challenged Dal Busco, the ball rebounded favorably for the striker and she rolled it into an empty net.

Balcatta almost levelled late on, Melanie Doeglas raced clear of the Beckenham defence but her low shot was well saved by Mears, and Beckenham hung on for the point.s
