Dreams of representing the Westfield Matildas are motivating the latest batch of young WA female players ahead of next week’s National Training Centre Challenge in Canberra.

WA coach Jessine Bonzas said the giant strides women’s football had made in recent years was reflected in the increasing quality of girls’ teams.

“There’s more opportunity with the W-League and the Matildas than there was five or 10 years ago and the girls can see a pathway to get there,” Bonzas said.

“The group of girls going over to the NTC Challenge aspire to play for Perth Glory in the W-League and the Young Matildas and Matildas. They’re aspirational and they are working extremely hard.”

Bonzas, who has been involved in the NTC for five years and coaching State teams since 2001, said players were rising to the challenge.

“Five years ago, we were probably a long way off but every year the players in the NTC are getting stronger and stronger,” she said.

The NTC Challenge, which involves the best young female players from around the country, will be held at the Australian Institute of Sport from June 9 to 13.

It showcases Australia’s best U17 talent and is used by football officials to identify talented players for inclusion in the national U20 and U17 teams.

The WA team has been preparing over the past six months and Bonzas is confident the girls will perform to their ability in Canberra.

“This is seen as part of their journey and our focus is on development,” she said. “I have no doubt the players and team will grow throughout this opportunity.”
