Goals from Brooke Johnston and Nicole Campbell were enough for Queens Park to earn a 3-1 win over the Northern Redbacks in the Bankwest Women’s State League Premier Division fixture at Coker Park on Sunday.

Queens Park proved to be all too much for the defending champions as costly mistakes in the seventh and 31st minutes saw them concede two goals in the first half.

Redbacks captain Shawn Billam said that her team’s first half performance wasn’t good enough.

“Our first half performance was not as good as it needed to be,” she said.

“We were a little bit slow off the blocks and the wind was pretty hard to play in truth.”

A handball inside the box allowed Queens Parks skipper Nicole Campbell to score from the spot in the seventh minute.

The home side were contesting the Redbacks defence with goalkeeper Lauren Blizard saving a one-on-one shot from Queens Park’s Rebecca Di Carlo.

Queens’ high pressure football paid off as Johnston intercepted a poor pass-back, taking it around Blizard to score against an open net.

The Redbacks still had hope with Renee Leota’s shot edging its way into the bottom right corner past goalkeeper Danelle Cornish in the 36th minute.

Queens Park coach Ben Anderton said that his side didn’t take advantage of the strong winds in the first half.

“Having the wind we should’ve taken more shots, so we didn’t really capitalise on that,” he said.

Queens Park continued to dominate possession in the second half having a string of shots but was unable to convert.

It took just over 30 minutes from the restart for Johnston to get her second after she received a low cross just outside the box, took a few touches and slotted the ball into the back of the net in the 78th minute.

Johnston almost got her third as she fired from long range when she saw the Redbacks goalkeeper out of position, but couldn’t keep it under the bar.

Anderton said that his side deserved win.

“We could’ve got a few more, but in saying that, the girls worked really hard and I’m happy to come away with the win.”
