Queens Park worked hard to earn their sixth consecutive win when they beat Balcatta 2-1 at Grindleford Reserve on Sunday in the Bankwest Women’s State League Premier Division.

Monique Gordon opened the scoring for Queens Park and Taylah Griffiths grabbed an equaliser before half time, but Balcatta’s comeback hopes were dashed when the game was sealed just after the hour mark by Stacey Learmont.

Balcatta coach Lisa Tana said she was very happy with her team’s performance despite the final result.

“I definitely think we deserved to get something out of the game,” she said.

“They’re [Queens] physical, fit, strong, quick and they press really hard but I thought we handled it well.

“They’ve gotten significantly better since the start of the season and for us to have matched them today has shown great improvement.”

Queens came out strong and eight minutes in Balcatta keeper Kirsty Grover was off her line to commit to a sliding challenge on Gordon.

Balcatta’s Ashleigh Panaia then produced a great strike from the edge of the area which keeper Maya Diederichsen tipped onto the crossbar.

Queens got the breakthrough in the 28th minute when Gordon latched onto a through ball and muscled off a defender to hit home.

They pressed to further their lead, opening up the play for Balcatta to counter and 10 minutes later Griffiths put through Rebecca DiCarlo who returned a pass across goal for Griffiths to make it 1-1.

After the break Queens continued their pursuit and were rewarded in the 63rd minute when Learmont was given time and space to fire in the box.

They kept up the pace and continually knocked long balls over the top seeking Brooke Johnston but Grover was quick to clear the danger.

Learmont felt hard done by when she was denied a second, feeling adamant she’d knocked the ball over the line in a goal line scramble from a corner.

Chelsie Winchcombe and Carol Howes both had shots towards goal but Balcatta’s closest chance to earn a point came four minutes from time when Monique D’Opera’s header lofted over the bar from Panaia’s cross.

Queens Park coach Grant Learmont said his side did well to grind out a result against a tough Balcatta side.

They face Beckenham Angels next week who beat them in an 11-goal thriller last time they met, but Learmont looks forward to the challenge.

“I’m happy with the progress of the girls, I just hope they’ve got enough in them to change the result from last time.”
