Glory girls surprise young Angels

Tuesday, February 18, 2014

Around 30 young girls from Perth’s south-east enjoyed a soccer skills clinic led by Beckenham Angels and inaugural Perth Glory Women player Dani Calautti – and received a surprise visit and talk by three current Glory players including Matildas co-captain Kate Gill.

The 90-minute clinic at Mills Park covered dribbling, shooting, tackling and beating opposition players in a series of exciting drills. Calautti will coach Beckenham’s U13 girls team and 2011 Football West women’s golden boot winner Andrea Preiato will coach Beckenham’s U15 girls team.

Both coaches were delighted by the enthusiasm and skill which the young players showed – as were Glory stars Gill, Chantel Jones and Rosie Sutton.

Gill explained to the girls that if they had the skills and worked hard enough, then there was a chance for them to travel overseas and play in the growing numbers of professional leagues – as well as playing for Australia.

2013 Football West women’s cup winners Beckenham Angels are building for the future by fielding teams in the Perth metropolitan U13 and U15 junior divisions this season. In addition, the club is fielding a Division 1 metropolitan women’s team to develop top young players, including those in the 15 to 18-year-old age group.

This week Beckenham Angels midfielder and Glory player Shannon May received the Perth Glory Women’s ‘Player’s Player’ award for the 2013/14 Westfield W-League season, along with finishing runner-up in their ‘Most Glorious Player’ award.
