Northern Redbacks are the 2016 Bankwest Women’s State Cup winners after a comprehensive 5-0 win against Melville City at Grindleford Reserve on Sunday afternoon.

Report by Peter Simcox

The Redbacks led 3-0 at the break with a double from Demi Vance and one from her strike partner Renee Leota before Carla Bennett and Jacinta Coleman wrapped up the scoring after the break.

Redbacks coach Conrad McKelvie said it was great team performance from his side.

“All season Melville has been a tough team to play against and we were prepared for that today,” he said.

“But we know if we stuck to our game plan our quality would shine through and testament to the girls they really worked hard today.

“Renee and Demi were a real handful up front and our defence, like it has been all season, were fantastic.”

The coach was a little coy when asked about adding the league title to their cup success next week with his side needing a win against Balcatta to do the double.

“I don’t want to talk about it yet, we still have a job to do next week here against Balcatta,” he said.

“They gave us a real test in the cup semi-final and they have really improved this season, so we have to make sure we’re up for it next week but we’ll enjoy today first.”

Vance, who won the Sandra Brentall medal for best player on ground, said they knew it would be tight start.

“We knew they (Melville) would be up for the game and we knew it would be tough early,” she said. “But we were on our game from the first whistle and we put in a great team performance.”

“We’ve trained hard this week and worked on few things and fortunately that came off for us today.”

It was tight opening with chances few and far between as both sides jostled for supremacy.

Vance’s long-range shot flew wide early for the Redbacks before Melville’s Lucy Jerram’s shot was saved low by Kathleen Waycott.

The first real chance fell to the Redbacks on 19 minutes. Vance raced clear after a slip by a Melville defender but Evie Gooch stood tall to deny her.

But on the half hour Redbacks’ pressure was rewarded with the lead.

A poor clearance from Gooch went straight to Vance, the Melville custodian raced out to try and recover the ball but Vance got there first and rolled home from 25m.

Tia Stonehill was a constant threat for the Redbacks and she went close to an equaliser five minutes later, her shot on the run was saved low by Waycott.

Vance caused problems for the Melville defence all afternoon and she turned supplier as they added a second on 38 minutes.

She raced clear down the right before cutting the ball back to Leota at the back post and the former New Zealand international made no mistake.

The Redbacks were well on top and Leota blazed over from 6m but in stoppage time their pressure was rewarded with a third, Vance’s corner sneaking in at the near post.

It was more of the same after the break with Larissa Walsh’s shot well-saved by Gooch before Bennett shot straight at the Melville keeper.

Melville weren’t giving up without a fight and Mikayla Lyons long-range shot was saved by Waycott, and the Redbacks custodian then had to be alert to deny Zoe Yao’s shot moments later.

But the Redbacks hit back and on 78 minutes they added a fourth. Lauren Riley sent Bennett racing clear and she finished clinically past Gooch.

It was 5-0 three minutes from time, Coleman heading home from a corner to seal a comprehensive victory.

Backpackers FC retained the Bankwest Metropolitan Cup with a clinical 4-0 win over Joondalup City on the back of Louise Porter’s hat-trick at Grindleford Reserve on Sunday.

Report by Kelechi Osunwa

Porter pounced on a sloppy goal kick to give Backpackers the lead after 20 minutes but Joondalup grew into the game forcing Backpackers’ custodian Sam Geddes into several significant saves one of which was helped by the cross bar.

Joondalup started the second half on the front foot and camped outside the Backpackers penalty area but tough tackling from Siobhan Ward and a string of more great saves from Geddes left Joondalup frustrated.

It would only get worse as Backpackers would double their lead against a run of play with an own goal from captain Cassandra Roberts before Porter would complete her hat-trick with two late strikes.

An injured but jubilant player-coach Lindsey Roe was delighted for her players.

“It feels amazing and I’m so happy for the girls,” Roe said.

“I would have loved to have been on the pitch but I just can’t be happier for the girls, every single one of them I’m just in awe of them right now.

“It’s been tough coming back and coming into a coaching role especially when they are my friends.

“But every single one of them have listened and they all did a job, they know what they were doing throughout the season and I’ve seen us grow from last year with some amazing performances.”

Porter had just blazed a chance high and wide moments before a sloppy goal kick went straight to her on the edge of the penalty area. She danced past two players and then drove her finish into the bottom left hand corner.

Joondalup had a great chance to equalise moments later and forced Geddes to deal with a dipping Clare Glover free kick which she could only palm onto the cross bar.

Backpackers had two great chances to double the lead first with Sally Chetwin who was through on goal and had her effort expertly smothered by the onrushing Avril Killeen.

Porter almost made it two but her free kick narrowly drifted past the post much to the disappointment of the Backpackers supporters who had already started to celebrate.

Joondalup slowly began to take a foothold of the match with Glover and Hope Compton dictating play in the midfield and Danielle Maton looking lively in the forward line whipping crosses across the keepers area.

Joondalup kept that foothold into the second half and were unlucky not to be level when  Matton fizzed a cross across the face of goal which was met by Candice Marrow’s glancing header which flashed wide of the far post.

Joondalup looked to have found a way to deal with the threatening porter through Vanessa O’Brien and Roberts at the back but it was Roberts that would unwittingly double the lead for Backpackers.

Jenna Pannell’s free kick was curled into the box with pace and Roberts rose high but steered the header over Killeen in goal.

Minutes later and the score was 3-0 when Porter picked up the ball on the edge of the penalty area and fired a low effort that managed to sneak past Killeen.

Joondalup were left to rue their luck as India Joyce fired a shot off the crossbar before Geddes pulled off two improbable saves; First to deny Maton from a tight angle before making an audacious piece of keep to hold on to a point blank chance.

The game was put beyond doubt when Porter claimed her hat-trick and a fourth for backpackers.

Porter found herself with a yard of space in the penalty area, shimmied past her maker and arrowed a low finish that left the keeper rooted to the spot.

The loss was Joondalup’s first of the season and coach Julian Barley backed his side to bounce back to hopefully win Metropolitan League Division Two.

“We’re gutted not to win, it’s the first time we lost all season but here we are in the final and we did our best,” he said.

“It was a good game and good to watch. It was good for our girls, for me to watch, for the supporters to watch and that’s what it’s all about. The enjoyment of the sport.

“We’ve scored a lot of goals all season we’ve scored 110 in the league and we’ve beaten teams just by scoring more than them but today was just one of those days nothing was going to go in for us.”
