West Australian Manrays on Football West TV

July 08, 2013 By: Penny Category: Football in the Media, Masters News, State Teams and Programmes

Check out Football West TV this week for the clip on the West Australian Manrays women’s football team in their last kick out prior to leaving for Italy.

The World Masters Games beckons for the 16 player squad.

The ladies, from all over WA, are gelling together neatly and shaping into the formidable force they have been for the last 20 years.

The squad travelling to Italy is:
Penny Tanner Hoath (Melville City Premier), Di Reeves (Leeming Division 1), Tina Glasson and Sylvia Jenkins (Mandurah Metro), Mhairi Glover, Wendy Peace, Mandy Laing, Sandra Szopski, Kerry Henry (Subiaco State League Division 1 and Metro), Elaine Anderson, Jayne Spalding, Lorraine Connop, Janet Robins (Hay Park), Shea Parker (Capel Wolves), Deb Farrell (Bunbury Dynamos and Force).

Some of the players to watch out for are…

Tina Glasson from Mandurah is an absolute bundle of energy. A farmer by day, Mandurah Metro player and Mother of 3, Tina is the teams road runner. With a David Beckham like work ethic, she is likely to be one of WA team’s top goal scorers in Italy.

Mhairi Glover (maiden name Angus), from Subiaco’s State League squad, is the team’s Scottish Aussie powerhouse. With great strength and passing, Mhairi is a challenge to stop in the attacking half.

Deb Farrell (maiden name Eve) has come into a new lease of footballing life this year. Debs Coaches and plays for Bunbury’s local powerhouse Dynamos, plus is dual registered for The Bunbury Forum Force in the Perth State League Division One. As a midfielder she has terrific vision and an eye for a great pass.  This will be a key in unlocking some of the top teams the Manrays will come against such as Canada and Japan.

The West Australian Manrays have some great items for sale to help their endeavours to get to Italy.

The teams budget is $120,000.00

Perth Glory A League shirt

The 2012/13 Westfield W-League was a historic one for Perth Glory as the WA team made the finals for the first time in its history. The new-look Kelme-designed purple and white strip was a hit with fans and was on show in every home match, where the Glory was undefeated during the league season. Matildas star Kate Gill returned from a serious knee injury to take out the W-League Golden Boot award and was instrumental in the team’s success in reaching the semi-finals. This shirt has been signed by the newly appointed Matildas co-captain. The pink and purple shirt is a separate item for sale.

The 2012/13 Westfield W-League season saw kit provider Kelme design a special pink and purple version of the shirt with support of the NBCF and Football Federation Australia. A massive crowd was on hand for the broadcast match where Rosie Sutton starred on her starting debut with a hat-trick in the 3-1 win over Sydney FC. Up for grabs is Shawn Billam’s shirt from the match, who came on as a substitute for Marianna Tabain late on.

Matildas downed by Den Haag

Matildas downed by Den Haag

The Westfield Matildas have gone down to Dutch club side Den Haag 1-0 overnight in the second friendly of their European tour in the Dutch city of Delft.

In an uncharacteristic display from the Australian side, the Westfield Matildas were unable to convert a multitude of opportunities throughout the match having conceded in the opening minutes.

“The game is for 90 minutes,” said coach Hesterine de Reus.

“Against the Netherlands we played very well in the first half and dropped off in the second. But today was the other way around, the opening half was poor and we became stronger in the second half.

“The game is for 90 minutes and we must be present for the whole 90, that is something we must learn.

“For me overall I am disappointed in losing to a club team. I think it should be impossible, we can’t let that happen.”

With three minutes on the clock defender Stephanie Catley was stranded on her own at the back following a Westfield Matildas corner kick. A quick counter-attack ensued with Den Haag’s striker Renate Jansen converting the chance to take the early lead.

The goal spurred the Australian side into action as Kyah Simon and Elise Kellond-Knight started to combine well but their efforts were continuously repelled by the exceptional Dutch goal keeper Barbara Lorsheyd.

Caitlin Foord and Simon created the best chance for the Australian side as halftime approached. Foord skillfully dribbled past her opponent to find Simon who unleashed a strike from just outside the 18 yard box only to find the out-stretched arm of Lorsheyd who palmed the ball away for a corner.

Australia continued to threaten with their set pieces as Kellond-Knight delivered a beautiful curling ball but Simon could only crash her powerful header into the crossbar to leave the score at 1-0 at the half.

Multiple substitutes were made during the break with defender Clare Polkinghorne, midfielder Teresa Polias and striker Michelle Heyman all entering the fray to try and turn the Matildas fortunes.

The Australians began to gain composure in the midfield with Polias and eventually Emily Van Egmond helping to settle the Australians in the midfield, but the breakthrough goal did not come.

In the dying minutes of the match Foord whipped a ball into the box, meeting Clare Polkinghorne’s head only to hit the side of the net as the Matildas failed to get the equaling goal.

The result was certainly not what the Matildas and head coach de Reus were looking for as the squad’s European tour reached its midpoint.

With friendly’s being an opportunity for teams to learn and grow together, de Reus did take some positives out of the loss.

“In my opinion in the first half we didn’t take notice of the team shape. It was all a bit individual, as soon as this happens then it is very hard to create a result,” continued de Reus.

“It was good for me to see how the girls reacted to shaking up the starting team and have players play out of position. It did make a difference today with our performance.

“It was a positive for me to see Teresa Polias take control of the midfield in the way that she did in the second half, along with Teigen Allen’s performance playing in an unfamiliar position sitting in behind the strikers.”

The Westfield Matildas will now leave Holland for France tomorrow in order to face the French national team on Saturday before returning to Australia.

“I think the girls are so shocked that a couple of days off before facing France on Saturday will be a good thing.”

Australia’s most prestigious junior football tournament for girls gets underway at Coffs Harbour International Stadium next week with the Westfield National Youth Championships for Girls.

FFA CEO David Gallop will officially open the tournament, which commences on Monday, July 8, and has been hosted by Northern NSW Football at the Coffs Harbour facility since 2006.

Western Australia will field an Under 13 and an Under 15 team, which will both compete in Group B.

Over 350 of Australia’s best young female footballers in the Under 13 and Under 15 divisions will participate in the tournament, with 22 teams from around Australia contesting the two age divisions.

The State Under 13 girls will play against Capital Football, Victoria Country, Tasmania, Northern Terrirtory and NNSW Select, while the State Under 15 girls will play South Australia, Capital Football, Tasmania, Victoria and Northern Territory.

Football West technical director Cris Ola is looking forward to seeing how the next generation of WA’s female football talent progresses.

“It’s been a long and hard selection process, but our coaches are really pleased with the final squads,” Ola said.

“Both teams have got some great talent and they can’t wait to get over there.

“Hopefully they can perform on the national stage and show early signs that we have some future Matildas and Perth Glory Women players unearthed.”
The Championships conclude on Friday, July 12, when the respective age Champions will be decided.
