The Western Sydney Wanderers tonight revealed the majority of their squad for their inaugural season in the Westfield W-League.  Spearheaded by three current Matildas and former Matilda Sarah Walsh, the Wanderers squad is a mixture of experienced and new W-League Players.

16 players were today revealed with Catherine Cannuli, Teigen Allen, Servet Uzunlar and Sarah Walsh the experienced components of the team.  The squad also boasts former players from the now defunct Central Coast Mariners Women including Trudy Camilleri, Jenna Kingsley, Jessica Seaman and Samantha Spackman.

While former Young Matildas and 2010 NSW Premier League Player of the Year Olivia Kennedy and former Sydney FC defender Alesha Clifford return to the national stage.

Coach Stephen Roche’s squad also contains several players with recent W-League experience and on the Young Matildas’ radar.  These include defender Alex Huynh (Newcastle Jets), midfielder Rachael Soutar (Sydney FC), Linda O’Neill (Newcastle Jets) as welll as Under 17s captain Alicia Bass.

Many of the players were born or have played their football in the local area.

“We chose players from the community and backed the Western Sydney area,” said Roche about his selections.

“At the end of the day you have to look at the players that are coming from that area and for them know that they have got somewhere to go to.”

The squad has yet to be completed with four players, including three possible internationals, yet to be added to the Season Five roster.

Of the last signings to round off the squad, Roche was coy about their internationals.

“They are exciting players and could be possible game changers,” was all he would divulge.

On his side’s ambitions for the first season, the former Mariners coach was more effusive.

“From my point of view, and I think if you ask any of the players, we are going to want Top Four.”

“We wanted people that were going to be committed to getting into the finals. Anything less than aiming for that is not what we are looking for.”

“I’m very happy with the compilation of our squad for the new season,” said Head Coach Jitka Klimkova.

“It was very difficult to select the final squad but the five youngsters who I have added to the mix have lots of talent, pace and motivation and will be a terrific addition to the group.”

As they have since inception, Canberra have once again managed to retain their core spine players including two time Golden Boot winner Michelle Heyman up front, current Julie Dolan Medallist Sally Shipard anchoring the midfield and defensive marshal Ellie Brush returning for her fifth season as United captain.

The newcomers include former German international Ariane Hingst, goalkeepers Mackenzie Arnold and Trudy Burke and W-League debutantes Sammie Wood and Catherine Brown.

“Of the twenty player squad we have only one international player and five from interstate [Hayley Raso and Arnold from Queensland, Cooper, Burke and Heyman from NSW],” stated CEO Heather Reid confirmed.

“The other fifteen players are all locally based showcasing the depth of talent that is available in the ACT and surrounding region. The inclusion of the young players in the final twenty will certainly help the development of the game in the Canberra region and we are confident that they have the skills, talent and capacity to thrive at the highest level.”

Canberra United kick off their title defence on Saturday 20 October with a grand final re-match against the Brisbane Roar.

A wrap on the weekend’s results.

Report by James Mooney

Northern Redbacks SC 4

Beckenham Angels SC 3 (Kirby Larsen, Lindsey Jobling, Katarina Jukic)

@ Celebration Park

The Northern Redbacks defeated league champions Beckenham Angels 4-3 yesterday at Celebration Park.

It was the perfect fixture to end the season on, although Beckenham had confirmed top place, the Redbacks and Beckenham were both this season’s benchmark teams.

The Redbacks came into the game with the hope of beating the Angels for the third time this season.

It was Beckenham who had a chance to jump ahead in the first minute of the game but solid defending from the Redbacks saw the chance cleared off the line.

The early miss for Beckenham saw the team drop down a couple of gears, as the Redbacks were able to put on some score line pressure.

The Redbacks took a 2-0 lead going into the half time break.

Beckenham finally got swinging with goals to Kirby Larsen and Lindsey Jobling pulling Beckenham back into the contest.

The Redbacks not to be flustered found another goal to extend their lead, however a goal from Beckenham’s Katarina Jukic soon made it three a piece.

It was to be the Redbacks day though who managed to find another goal near the end to see out the game 4-3 winners.

This will not be the last time these two teams face each other this year, as the Bankwest Women’s Cup Final between the two will be next Sunday October 7.

East Fremantle SC 2

Balcatta 5

@ Wauhop Park

This game was played on September 9, which saw Balcatta defeat East Fremantle 5-2.

The win helped Balcatta confirm their spot in third place at the season’s end.

East Fremantle finished in sixth place, although second from bottom, many predict their young players will shape some big plans for next season.

FW NTC 17’s 0

UWA-Nedlands FC 2

@ Celebration Park

This game was played on Thursday September 20 which saw UWA-Nedlands defeat FW NTC 17’s 2-0.

UWA-Nedlands finished the season off in fifth place, however it was only a matter of four points separating them from third place Balcatta.

FW NTC 17’s closed out the season in seventh, however continue to develop the future young women’s talent in the State League and beyond.

Matildas trio to boost Glory girls

Thursday, October 04, 2012

Perth Glory Women is pleased to have announced its 2012/13 playing roster for the upcoming Westfield W-League season, with a number of handy additions.

Three Westfield Matildas have signed on with Perth Glory, with Collette McCallum rejoining the team after missing last the last W-League season and playing in the off-season with English giants Lincoln Ladies.

Another familiar face will be Kate Gill who returns to action after missing last season due to a serious knee injury. The third Matilda will be Aivi Luik, who has joined the Glory from Brisbane Roar.

“These three players will have a huge influence on the team this season and really give us a solid core of players that our younger players can learn from,” said coach Jamie Harnwell.

The Perth Glory men’s legend also announced that McCallum will be the club’s new captain following Tanya Oxtoby’s decision to remain in England coaching Nottingham Forrest.

“Collette’s choice as captain was an easy one for me,” said Harnwell.

“Already at training you can see the drive she has and the ability to improve players around her. Collette has the respect of the coaching staff and the players and is the ideal person to lead us this season.”

There will be a continued international flavour with England and Chelsea goalkeeper Carly Telford signing on with Perth. She will also be joined by Canadian defender Sasha Andrews and young New Zealand international Liz Milne, who can play anywhere across the back four.

“Sasha is a imposing centre-half with a great deal of experience,” said Harnwell.

“She has only joined in a couple of sessions but you can just see the presence she brings and will be a huge addition to strengthening our back line as well as Liz who is looking to further her career in the Westfield W-League. I have had great reports about Carly too and she is a leader who is playing at the top level in Europe and we are extremely fortunate to have signed her.

“We have managed to assemble a strong squad and credit must go to Football West for their backing of this team. The players are focused on having a good season and I believe a finals position should be within reach with the talent we have available.”

Harnwell will be assisted by Gary Church and the team is currently in preparation for their Round One blockbuster at home to Melbourne Victory on Sunday 21 October. Kick-off at Inglewood’s Intiga Stadium is at 10.30am.
