Football West News

Report by Nathan Drudi

UWA-Nedlands 2 (Katie Schubert, Own Goal)
NTC 0
@ Celebration Park B

UWA-Nedlands have scored a convincing win over the NTC at Celebration Park on Sunday morning.

The NTC never troubled UWA-Nedlands apart from a 10-minute surge in the second half.

After leading 1-0 at half time, the UWA-Nedlands girls moved further ahead with an own goal coming off a Tash Whitby cross.

UWA-Nedlands dominated the game, hitting the post twice and missing some simple chances throughout the game.

The NTC take on East Fremantle next week, while UWA-Nedlands will have a week to recover drawing the bye.

Northern Redbacks 4 (Nicola Williams 2, Carol Howes, Jacquie Nellany)
Beckenham Angels 2 (Kris Antonic, Dani Calautti)
@ Celebration Park A

The top of the table clash between the Northern Redbacks and Beckenham Angels has not disappointed the hype that surrounded the game.

In what Northern Redbacks coach Tim said was a great spectacle for women’s soccer, the ladder leaders Beckenham went down in a classy game.

After leading 2-1 at half time, the Redbacks fell asleep in the second and allowed Beckenham to level before they awoke and pulled away to a 4-2 win.

Both sides missed chances that could have swung the game in the other direction, but the Redbacks steadied to run away two goal winners.

Balcatta 5 (Laura Turnbull 2, Kylie Chatto, Prue Cormick, Ashley Panaia)
East Fremantle 0
@ Wauhop Park

Balcatta has gone on a second half rampage at Wauhop Park on Sunday afternoon to leave East Fremantle scratching their heads.

After the game entered half time at 0-0, Balcatta came out firing, scoring five goals to none.

Everything clicked for the Balcatta side, and they saved the few chances that East Fremantle had.

Laura Turnbull scored her third goal in two weeks as Balcatta ran away easy victors.

East Fremantle challenge the NTC next week, while Balcatta take on the Northern Redbacks in what is set to be a cracker of a game.

Attention Masters Women

May 26, 2012 By: Penny Category: State Teams and Programmes

The Plan Pacific Masters Games are in the Gold Coast on 3-11 November.  We are looking to register an Over 40s Women’s Football Team and possibly a over 30s Futsal Team.

Football is held Sunday 4th November to Saturday 10th November (finals).  While Futsal is Friday 2nd November to Sunday 4th November.  While they overlap we can put in a fixturing request although it will no doubt mean we play futsal in morning and outdoor in afternoon/evening.

This is a great fun tournament for those who haven’t been before.  They have a great games village every night and the partying is great although by the end of the week it can be quite tiring.  The Perth Strikers have enjoyed some good success in previous masters tournaments starting with Bronze at the World Masters in Brisbane in 1994, Silver at the World Masters in Melbourne in 2002 and a host of gold, silver and bronze medals at the Pan Pacific Masters Games and Australian Masters Games over the years.  The Southwest Stingers have also enjoyed success at the Pan Pacific Masters Games.

Costs for the tournament are football ($75 sports fee), futsal ($30 sports fee) and then there is a $100 games fee on top.  Non playing members pay a reduced cost – $65 which gets them access to the games village.  Other costs include flights (everybody generally organises their own) and accommodation (we typically look for 2-3 bedroom apartments twin share – we haven’t got any costs yet but normally budget $60 per person per night although we haven’t been for a few years so could more).  Obviously a food and drinking budget also needs to be found but this can be done as cheaply as you want/need.  We will be looking to get sponsorship for strips and a travelling shirt but if we don’t there will be a small additional cost.

Are you interested in playing?  We are looking for expressions of interest with a $100 deposit by 15 June.  Currently we have Ali Butler and Sandra Szopski who have booked their flights and we have 6-7 interested players.  The deposit will go towards accommodation booking.

For more details go to http://mastersgames.com.au/default.asp?PageID=11358

If you are keen please contact Mhairi Glover on 0417 170 275 or Mandy Laing on 0401 007 090 for more details, express your interest and make your payment.  We plan to have a meeting late June when we know who is interested.

Sandra Brentnall makes history

20.05.2012

Sandra Brentnall made history last Saturday night (May 19) when she became the first female anywhere in the world to be inducted into a Football Hall of Legends.

The 49-year-old re-wrote the sporting record books at the Football Hall of Fame WA induction ceremony at a Perth hotel.

Along with WA’s record international goalkeeper Robert Zabica, who was also welcomed into the Hall of Legends at the gala celebration, Brentnall joined an elite band of players to be elevated to legendary status.

The inaugural members of the Hall of Legends, which was established in 2005, are former Australian captains Gary Marocchi and Ron Adair, international defender Robbie Dunn and record goalscorer John McInroy.

Brentnall was the first female to score an international goal for Australia back in 1979 when she struck in the 2-2 draw against New Zealand in the Trans Tasman Cup.

A year later, she became the first Australian to get an international hat-trick when she bagged a triple in the 3-2 win over New Zealand.

Spearwood-born Zabica played 42 times for Australia – his most famous being against Argentina’s Diego Maradona in a 1994 World Cup qualifier – and won two NSL titles with Adelaide City. He had a spell with Perth Glory and was Australia’s Goalkeeper of the Year in 1992.

Among those who were inducted into the Hall of Champions on Saturday night were WA’s most-capped international Stan Lazaridis, former Socceroos goalkeeper Tony Franken and two other ex-internationals in Bobby Despotovski and Scott Miller.

Julie Gorton and Judy Pettitt, who played many times for the Australian women’s team, were also inducted into the Hall of Champions.

Brothers Steve and Paul Tombides became the third set of siblings to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. They were among a group of 14 to be welcomed into the Hall of Merit for Players.

Two former referees Andy Gorton and Frank Moretti were inducted into the Hall of Recognition, which also honoured former Perth Azzurri coaches John Birighitti and Doug Stewart, 81, who flew in from Queensland to accept his award.

Football West News

Report by Nathan Drudi

Northern Redbacks 2
UWA-Nedlands 0

@ Celebration Park A

The Northern Redbacks have beaten UWA-Nedlands in a fairly even game at Celebration Park.

The game was even in the first half with neither side being able to break the deadlock before half time.

In the second half, the Redbacks managed to get on top of UWA-Nedlands and scored two goals in the last 25 minutes of the game to record their fourth win of the season.

Carla Bennett and Jacqueline Nellany scored the goals for the contenders, as UWA-Nedlands stay down the bottom end of the ladder.

The Northern Redbacks get the bye next week, while UWA-Nedlands take on Queens Park.

NTC 0
Queens Park 4

@ Celebration Park B

Queens Park has recorded a big win over the struggling NTC.

A 4-0 win to Queens Park came after a slow start for both sides.

Once Queens Park managed to score their first goal, they calmed down and continued their dominance.

Emily Dean, Timira Rowatt and Monique Gordon scored the goals for Queens Park.

Gordon scored two of the four goals after coming back from suspension, with one of the goals being beautifully set up by Woodfin who came on as a substitute.

The NTC tackle Balcatta next week, while Queens Park take on UWA-Nedlands.

Balcatta 2
Beckenham Angels 7

@ Grindleford Reserve

The Beckenham have claimed top spot on the ladder after a 7-2 demolition of Balcatta at Grindleford Reserve.

Balcatta started well kicking the opening two goals of the match inside the first 20 minutes, with Hazel Barton and Bec Di Carlo put the ball in the net.

The tides soon turned when Dani Calautti scored a remarkable hat-trick in just eight minutes to put the Angels ahead 3-2 at half time.

The run continued in the second half as the goals came from Andrea Preiato and Danielle Jeans, while Lindsey Jobling scored two.

Balcatta take on the NTC next week at Grindleford Reserve, while Beckenham tackles East Fremantle.
