Grassroots sports club funding boost

Sunday, 12 May 2013
$500,000 boost for grassroots sporting facilities at Celebration Park, Balga
Upgrade to run-down facilities used by Northern Redbacks Women’s Soccer Club
Funding recognises important role sport plays in strong communities
The State Government has delivered on an election promise to provide a boost for sport in the Balga and Mirrabooka areas.

Premier Colin Barnett promised $500,000 to upgrade the run-down and outdated facilities at Celebration Park in Balga, home of the highly successful Northern Redbacks Women’s Soccer Club, after inspecting the facilities last year.

This week, the Premier visited the Redbacks senior training session to announce that funding had been formally approved to allow the work to go ahead.

“The Northern Redbacks Women’s Soccer Club typifies what grassroots sport is all about and it can be proud of what it has achieved even though it operates from facilities that are run-down and unsuitable,” Mr Barnett said.

“The club is one of the most successful women’s soccer clubs in Western Australia but it doesn’t have women’s change rooms, so players are forced to change in the men’s toilets, which are in poor condition.

“The Government recognises that sporting clubs like the Northern Redbacks play an important role in healthy local communities.

“This funding is part of the Government’s unprecedented commitment to support sport from grassroots level to elite standards, with initiatives including the new Perth Stadium, nib Stadium, a high performance State Netball Centre, as well as new community courts, and the KidSport initiative to help 13,000 disadvantaged children into sport.”

The Premier said the Northern Redbacks had 75 players spread across five junior and senior teams.  The club’s success was highlighted by the fact that it had fostered elite talent, including Lisa De Vanna and Collette McCallum, who had played for the Matildas, and several players who had represented the Perth Glory women’s team.

Mr Barnett said $500,000 would be granted to the City of Stirling to carry out the Celebration Park development in consultation with the soccer club.

“This will deliver an important community facility.  It will benefit clubs across Perth when they compete at Celebration Park, and serve other sporting clubs in the Balga and Mirrabooka areas,” he said.

“I’m grateful for the efforts of community members Andrea Creado and City of Stirling councillor Keith Sargent for highlighting the conditions at Celebration Park and for their commitment to representing the club’s needs, leading to this funding.”

Steve Ireland (Perth Hills)
Tras Young (North Beach)
Lee Waterman (Quinns)
Tim Hodgson (Redbacks)
Conrad McKelvie (UWA)
Elisa D’Ovidio (Football West)
CEO Football West and Competitions manager
If you need contacts for anyone either reply here or go to Football West for information 94226900 or info@footballwest.com.au.

Nominations are open for the next WSC.  This is an unbiased process through the AEC. Nominations close May 3. The WSC is important for making reviews and recommendations direct to Football West (FBW). Your club committee will have a Club Pack forwarded by FBW. Nomination forms are in that and need endorsement by your Club President and Secretary.

Standing Committees are so vital to have your thoughts heard! Sometimes FBW just dont have the time to deal with the ground issues and thats where the WSC come in.

There is a Junior Standing Committee up and running now and the contacts are on the Corporate section of footballwest.com.au website. Nominations are also open for that Committee.

Here’s an update on whats happened over the summer and whats upcoming.

The Girls Day Out was held at NIB Stadium with 150 young girls attending this year compared to 100 last year. Thanks to Bankwest and Football West for providing a free event for the girls! They all went away with a bad, water bottle shirt and lots of Glory signatures.

The competition this year will consist of State League and Metropolitan Competition plus Junior competition. The State league consists of Premier and Reserves and Division One and reserves and has 8 teams in each division. It includes Cockburn and Bunbury as new entrants The Girls NTC programme participates as 17s in the Premier competition and 15s in the Premier reserves competition. They cannot be relegated. It is one up and one down within the state league. Metropolitan divisions this year start at Division One not Division two! A team from the Metro League can apply to enter the State league. Note that girls can play in boys competitions and you should request an assessment or info from FBW in this instance regards to duty of care and safety. The womens NTC programme squad play in the boys 14s Premier competition and is age capped at 19. This squad is for players that WA feels will progress into National teams in the near future or are already participating in them. You will also see the likes of our local Matildas Collette MacCallum and Katy Gill training and playing with the mens NTC 18s in the mens State League.

The Night Series was held at Noranda and Coker Park again this year through March and April.
New trophies were introduced- Player of the Grand Final- Carla Bennett (Northern Redbacks) and Player of the Series- Evie Gooch (Melville). The POS trophy was voted for by the Coaches and is an inaugural trophy that will be continued every year.
Night Series Winners Premier Group Northern Redbacks over Queens Park
First Division Group Leeming Strikers over Bunbury Forum Force
Both the new State league entrants Cockburn and Bunbury participated in the Series this year.

The Cup Round starts Anzac day April 25. Premier teams are not in the first round. Go to footballwest.com.au > outdoor > metro competition for the draw or womensoccer.com.au>facebook. Your club can opt out of competiting if squad numbers are low.  Note once played you are cup tied.

Match officials.  There has been some talk amongst the State League to instigate 3 officials for every premier match ie a centre ref and two linesman.  Football West have advised there is not enough referees to attend to this this year.  If you want to lobby for this, I suggest you ask your club to put forward comments to the womens registrar at FBW angela.murphy@footballwest.com.au

WA Manray Masters. There are two Australian teams playing in the World Masters games in Turin Italy this August.  One of those teams is from WA. Masters is over 30. This World Games happens only every four years. There will be 50,000 competitors from all sports participating. Its the second largest competition in the world to the Olympics. The WA ladies won gold at the Gold Coast Pan Pacifics last year and have won more medals than any other WA sport team that I know of. Some names you may know in the squad are myself, Penny Tanner, Di Reeves, Mhairi Glover, Mandy Laing, Lorraine Connop, Deb Farrell, Tina Glasson, Sandra Szopski. Watch out on 107.9FM for some promotion on the ladies as they fundraise their way to Italy. The squad needs to raise $120,000 to get there. Thanks to Football West and Manray Builders for their huge support. If you want to help, please be in contact with Penny via email.

Turin Masters website: http://www.torino2013wmg.org/

There is a Masters Games in August this year at Cairns near the Great Barrier Reef: http://res.au.eventdirector.net/GCAM/SITES/1809/default.asp?PageID=23212 plus the usual biannual games at the Gold Coast next year: http://www.mastersgames.com.au/default.asp?PageID=11358. Have fun you over 30s and dont forget you do not need to be playing at a high level or even registered and playing football to play Masters.  Its all about participation. The Pan Pacific Masters is the worlds biggest Masters competition!

Casual HUB FOOTBALL

Too much football is never enough

Friday, February 22, 2013

Backpackers FC has launched a new initiative to give WA footballers more opportunities to get a kick out of the game.

The organisation’s casual 11-a-side concept, which will run each Saturday at Gibbney Reserve in Maylands, is open to all players, including those already registered with clubs.

Backpackers FC managing director Neil Hookway said Hub Football would combine the ease of access normally associated with a social indoor kick-about with the full-sized game.

“Our Casual five-a-side sessions at indoor venues have been extremely successful, and now we’ve responded to the demand for an 11-a-side version,” Hookway said.

Individual players can register their interest by sending an email to info@backpackersfc.com. Players are invited to attend casual sessions prior to the start of the season where they will be organised into teams ahead of the first round of games.

Hookway said he expected to have 12 teams in place for the start of the inaugural season given the response to the project through social media. The Hub Football League Facebook page has  registered 650 likes since its launch three weeks ago.

There is no requirement for teams to be club-based but it is hoped teams will be entered by workplaces, student associations, backpacker hostels, language schools and other similar organisations.

Football West chief executive Peter Hugg said the Hub Football concept was a perfect fit with Football West’s push to promote more non-traditional forms of the game.

“The Hub Football program gives a much more flexible solution to those who have difficulty being able to commit to a full football season,” he said. “Increasingly we are being challenged to come up with activities and programs that meet the demands of community members whether they be FIFO workers, transient visitors to the state or workers who have been affected by the deregulation of shopping hours.”

The competition encourages social participation, allowing players to join Hub Football while continuing to take part in other Football West competitions, such as the My Solar Sunday and Metropolitan Leagues.

Hub Football has the support of Football West, including agreement on the rules of competition and governance model, provision of referees and fixture/league management with Sporting Pulse.

Teams will be charged $150 to compete in each fixture. This includes the cost of a qualified Football West referee and aims to deliver players 90 minutes of football for $10 each.

Hookway said he was hopeful the Hub Football competition at Gibbney Reserve would lead to the development of similar projects across the metropolitan area.

“Hopefully the Gibbney Hub will prove to be just the start of an exciting new chapter for football in WA,” Hookway said.

Teams will play each Saturday from April 6, with kick-offs at 12pm and 2pm.

Vale Frank Longstaff

March 01, 2013 By: Penny Category: Club Noticeboard, History

Friday, March 01, 2013
A great deal of the football community are already aware that this week we lost a true gentleman of the game in Frank Longstaff.

——————————————————————————–

Frank lost his short battle with illness but will be forever remembered by not only his family and friends but the hundreds if not thousands that he has influenced in a footballing sense, that have been fortunate enough to have known Frank.

It is undoubtedly a sad and emotional time for all concerned, however for those who wish to show their respects towards a great man and celebrate his life the funeral details are as follows:

The funeral will be held at the West Chapel at Fremantle Cemetery at 2pm on Friday 8th March.

Football West would like to pass on its condolences to the Longstaff family at this difficult time.
