Football West News

WA State Junior Futsal teams returned from a testing week at the National Championships in Sydney with a spring in their step and their heads held high.

The four WA teams were put through their paces against the country’s best teams in a week-long tournament.

Football West Development Officer Garry Church, who travelled with the group, said WA players had performed admirably in a competition that exposed them to the highest possible standards.

“The whole week was a fantastic experience for the players,” Church said. “They were all extremely competitive overall and walked away from the tournament with invaluable experience.

“This is the second year we’ve taken teams across for the National Futsal Championships and I expect we’ll continue to get stronger as our players experience this level of quality more often.”

Wednesday, October 05, 2016

More than 800 regional footballers travelled to Perth to take part in the annual QBE Country Week.

In a sign of football’s growing regional influence, a girls U12 competition was held for the first time, while teams from Port Hedland and Broome made their inaugural appearances.

Teams travelled from centres across the state, including from Esperance in the south and the Goldfields to the east, to compete at Cockburn City’s Beale Park from Monday, September 26, to Friday, September 30.

Football West General Manager of Community Football and Game Development Jamie Harnwell said QBE Country Week was the most prestigious regional activity on the football calendar.

“It takes a huge commitment of time and money from players, their parents, coaches and officials, to be part of the QBE Country Week,” Harnwell said.

“But they are prepared to make the commitment because it provides them with a unique opportunity. This gives regional players and coaches the chance to engage in a higher level of competition than that which is available in their regions.

“It’s also great that they benefit socially from meeting new people from all over the state.”

The QBE Country Week is also used to identify the best regional players, who will be invited to the QBE Country Camp in 2017 to experience an intensive training environment.

“Football development in a state as big as ours is challenging but there are some very hard-working people doing great work in WA’s regions,” Harnwell said.

“Football West development staff make regular visits to regional areas to work with regional players and coaches to help increase interest in the game and also the standard of football outside of Perth.”

A total of 11 Melville players did WA proud this week across the four age girls and boys groups at the championships on August 21-26.

The five Melville City players selected in the 19s girls squad were Lucy Jerram (WA captain), Issy Bridger (WA vice-captain), Grace Smith, Piper Boobyer and Jaime Duncanson.

All are part of the Melville City premier women’s squad playing in the State league competition.

Issy’s dad and brother played for Melville, her little sister now plays 13s and is coached by her dad at Melville; Issy is an essential part of the midfield at Melville.

The boys 19s team included four Melville players, Rion Robertson, Shane Boyle, Logan McIsaac (WA captain) and George Festa.

After a week of championship games, a National squad and a Shadow squad have been selected.

The sole Melville player selected in any of the WA 19s Australian teams was WA captain Lucy Jerram.

In the Shadow squad, WA vice-captain Issy Bridger and Shane Boyle were the Melville representatives.

The WA 19s girls finished the week with an 8-1 win over ACT Friday and a bronze medal, while the WA 19s boys team and the girls 12s also capped off their good week with a bronze.

Melville City’s girls 12s contingent included dynamo midfielder Matilda Boyle and goalkeeper for the 14s Melville girls team, Danielle Greaney.
